Livelihood Project

Livelihood Project - Goat distribution

“You can do it; I know you will succeed; pray until it becomes pleasing to God.” – Mother Emilie Dorman (Co-Foundress – SAL)

This initiative takes place in the district of Krishna, Andhra Pradesh. Many of the women in these district are seasonal labourers – which means that they are only employed during certain months of the year. For the rest of the months, they sit at home with no means of earning an income. While some of the women go to work as manual labourers on construction sites, other women cannot perform the same work either due to illness, or they are recovering from a surgical procedure or because of a weak constitution.

SAL provides these women with resources to supplement their income in order to manage their households during these months and perhaps as a future recourse. The women are given financial help to buy goats. These goats then produce a litter of 2-3 goats doubling their income within 6 months. They can either sell the goats or keep maintaining them for dairy products. Since this initiative was a success, the Sisters are now looking forward to expanding this initiative by providing financial support to buy buffaloes. They also provide financial help to widows in Vijayawada who want to start small-scale businesses.
